To Wolverton, my old stamping ground of 50 years ago, to catch up with Princess Elizabeth on the Doric Olympian. The station is a shadow of its former self but there's never a dull moment with fast and slow lines in constant use. But although I saw perhaps 30 trains there was only one two-tone horn, despite the growing audience...and of course Lizzie's apology for a whistle - I'm sure Stanier could have done better. Mind you the guard on the Northampton train had a novel way of getting people on board - 'beam me up Scottie' - look out for it at 48 secs. In the old days the semaphore signals would tell you when a train was due - today it's the platform announcement - usually to 'stand well...

March 1st - St David's Day, fantastic blue skies and 60163 is heading into Wales. I'm on a rural bridge in Wiltshire and I'm joined by a group of friendly locals, keen to see Tornado. We watch a procession of hsts, with one or two false alarms, then Charlie reckons he can hear the whistle a few miles off. Sure enough Tornado heads across the middle distance and we await the run past. It's a bit extravagant, but I film from both sides (I had my old camera mended and stuck it on a tripod to see if it worked ok). I prefer hand-held, despite the wobbles - the tripod is shooting a bit high. From whichever side it's over in a flash and a Class 66 on freight shows how the light was just perfect...

The Spokane, Portland & Seattle 700 is a Northern type E1 class 4-8-4 steam locomotive. It is maintained by the The Pacific Railroad Preservation Association. It is one of three steam engines that live at the Brooklyn Roundhouse in Portland, Oregon. The Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation is now looking for a new home for these engines - since the Union Pacific has other plans for the space. I took this video at the oopening of the Spring Water Corridor between OMSI (the oregon Museum of Science and Industry) and Oaks Park in June 2003. I had a big Sony PD 250 camera from PCM down on the ground about 5 feet from the tracks. It was a fun experience as the train roared by! Coyoteco

This video is a montage of a few short videos I took with my camera from the Ötscherland Express, a narrow gauge railway running between Kienberg-Gaming and Lunz am See in the Austrian state of Niederösterreich. The red roofed complex you see in the third section is the Kartause Mariathron, a 14th century monastery which has been home to Franciscan University of Steubenville's Austria program since the early 1990's. I lived there for the fall semester in 2004, and these videos were taken on October 2 of that year. The Kartause has not been an active monastery since the 1700's.

Can you afford to miss out these model railroading secrets? Click here: tinyurl.com . This 1940-built streamline steam locomotive is oil-fueled since 1956 and was used as a steam locomotive monument in Bebra/Germany after the locomotive has been withdrawn. The steam engine has a nice sound, since it has three cylinders. This steam locomotive has a top speed of 140 kph and 2470 Hp. Weight: 179,5 t.
