jakeyboygen, GWRDec and I made a trip to the Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway on Monday 24th August 2009. The railway was running their two train 'Peak Service' which would see nine departures each way during the day. The engines in action were GWR 2-8-0T 42xx Class 'Heavy Freight Tank' number 4277 'Hercules' and BR(W) 4-6-0 78xx 'Manor' Class number 7827 'Lydham Manor' both hauling a set of seven coaches along the line. The P&DSR is one of the UK's most senic heritage lines running from the holiday resort of Paignton along the coast past Goodrington and Broadsands then uphill to the passing loop on the line at Churston before heading downhill through Greenway Tunnel and along the...

Our Cass train was hauled by a Shay and a Heisler. Both are geared locomotives, designed for use with steep grades and sharp curves (which abound at Cass, a former lumber line). The Shays are the big attraction at Cass -- it has the largest collection of operating Shays in the world. The locos are always on the downhill end of the train (for safety reasons), so they basically push the cars up Bald Mountain, then pull them down again. There are two locos going up (for speed and power), and just one coming down (when gravity helps!). The brakes on the cars are used during the descent to keep the train under careful control, especially on the switchbacks where the locomotive is at the uphill...

This is an actual running steam engine FRISCO 1630 runs and huffs and puffs and makes all the real noise. This engine was built in USA for Russia in 1918 for trans Siberian Railway, but was never delivered because of the revolution. This engine was refitted with different wheels so it could run on american track. It lived and worked here at home for very long time. Then it was restored to it's original glory by volunteers at Union station museum of rail.

Hi again all, The small selection of clips which you see here were filmed today (5/1/2010) and show just how badly the snowfalls affected our garden railway. We did manage, (using old wagons as snow-ploughs), to clear the main running line however. Then, once this was done, 1 train could operate on the circuit, clearing the snow as it fell so to speak. The steam locomotive used, No4560, a Bachmann 45XX Small Prairie Tank, performed well running bunker-first around the circuit hauling our 4 LNER Teak Coaches. Various parts of the circuit can be seen. Notable area's blocked with snow (at least 3 inches deep) were chilvers loop (completely buried!), sutherland yard (in which 3 wagons were...

My 6th visit to the Paignton & Dartmouth Steam Railway, 'The Nations Holiday Line' on Wednesday 13th August 2008. Now I know a hell of a lot of enthusiasts are against the P&DSR, saying that they don't keep locomotives in original liveries along with naming them, using coloured lights etc, but I think the P&DSR GWR liveries are better than the GWR real ones, come on, your saying 'Lydham Manor' looks rubbish?, and do the signals really matter? So if you hate it so much why do they keep going there? - because you know its one of the best lines in the country. The views are superb of Torbay, the sea and of the River Dart. I can understand naming locomotives because holiday-makers...

The Spokane, Portland & Seattle 700 is a Northern type E1 class 4-8-4 steam locomotive. It is maintained by the The Pacific Railroad Preservation Association. It is one of three steam engines that live at the Brooklyn Roundhouse in Portland, Oregon. The Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation is now looking for a new home for these engines - since the Union Pacific has other plans for the space. I took this video at the oopening of the Spring Water Corridor between OMSI (the oregon Museum of Science and Industry) and Oaks Park in June 2003. I had a big Sony PD 250 camera from PCM down on the ground about 5 feet from the tracks. It was a fun experience as the train roared by! Coyoteco
