A Pacific National freight train, running on the standard gauge track, makes a quick dash through a country road level crossing located on the Geelong to Melbourne portion of the line. In the distance I could see the headlight of another train and hoped I'd get a side by side pacing shot however the V/line passenger train, running on the broad gauge track, was just a bit too slow for my dream to be realised.

The famous Bounemouth Pines express Archive film of Shllingston Stoupaine Durweston halt to Blandford forum steam railway in the 1960's Continued from Blandford Forum through Charlton Marshal Spetisbury to Bailey Gate cheese factory the S&D railway from operations in the 1960's to 20 years later in the early 1980's. The remains of the track bed and some cuttings I filmed then have now gone leaving only one arch as evidence of the grand old days of steam railways. I always thought as a child in the 1960's this line would be here forever with all that work to construct, it took around 2 years and built to last a thousand years, only to last little more than a life time. Dr Beeching known...

The BWLR - Bredgar & Wormshill Light Railway www.bwlr.co.uk/The Bredgar and Wormshill Light Railway is a 2ft gauge line tucked away in a wooded area of the North Kent Downs, near the village of Bredgar. This has to have been one of the most fun railways I've been to, and certainly has to be the best "garden railway" anywhere.

This film is available to buy as part of the 18-disc boxset 'The British Transport Films Collection' - filmstore.bfi.org.uk 11 August 1968 is a highly significant date in British railway history, marking the official end of regular mainline steam operation. As we see the last steam train crossing the Pennines and hear the Edwardian music-hall song 'Watching the Trains Go Out', Sir John Benjamin begins to reminisce. His nostalgic verse and prose recall the great trains of old as he moves through a photographic exhibition in Kingsway. For more information on British Transport Films, visit www.screenonline.org.uk
